It is said that the seventh son of a seventh son is destined for either doom or greatness. Sadly, no one ever talks about what happens to his next eldest brother. With a small land holding left over from being split amongst his own brothers and a wisp of a title gained from being able to keep his mouth shut about certain illegitimate children, the Duke Vizjeri faced a new quandry in what to do with his own spawn. Obviously, his eldest would inherit his meager lands and title. The next entered the clergy, well and good, number three became an officer in the army. Four found himself a decent place as a court toady, a position that would at least give him the chance to marry into some money. Five had the decency to get himself killed in a silly duel over someone’s sister. Seven was the old Duke’s favorite, kept close to home and cherished. But what to do with ‘young master Tim’, as the staff called him.

How rarely things go according to plan…

Unlike most other apprentices who spent their time and trouble on illusions and enchantments to use on the girls of the surrounding town, Timothy focused on defeating such petty tricks. He quickly caught the eye of a Master Dekain, an abjuration specialist. After a few months of more rigorous tutelage, the apprentice was deemed ready for admittance to a certain secret society. Shortly thereafter, Dekain sent his student on an ‘extended errand’ for some special components which would prove rather difficult to find…
